It's now 2025, 12 years later than the start of this thread and it appears that it will save my engine I typed "why does water leak from the exhust port on 8CM flathead" and this thread came up. Yep, I have the same problem;actually two problems both of which are solved by the folks on this...

woodie with passenger car rear springs

I'd like to soften up my ride by replacing the rear springs on my 1950 Merc woodie with the passenger car springs. Has anyone done that? The woodie is not used as it was designed to carry eight passengers plus baggage, but two people and baggage as would happen in a car.

    Feel vibration around 50mph

I’d check the u joints. Not just for tightness but pull the cap and look for a washboard pattern on the shaft of the joint

    1950 Mercury Heater Q's

Investigation and repairs completed. The switch had faulty contacts on spring loaded shaft. It is a two speed switch now that I've removed the gummy grease. I soldered a bubble of solder on top of the two contact points. and heated them enough to create a smooth bubble for the contact point...

Lowest workable rear end ratio with 1950 Merc

I'm keeping the rear end for now and want to thank everyone for their advice and for searching their stock for used OD transmissions. I gave Mac Van Pelt a call and he assembled a completely rebuilt OD trans for my car, complete with new controls. I may get around to a 3.9 rear end but for now...

Yes, I have a reprint manual but it isn't showing me the detail that you have.

    1950 Mercury Heater Q's

Definately a single step switch, must be different than the Ford. The owners manual also shows the switch as a one step switch. The back of the dash is tight and full view of the blower switch is blocked by the ignition. Pressing onward as cool weather is starting to set in. Thanks for...

    1950 Mercury Heater Q's

Dan, thanks. I'm going to go investigate now. I have only one position on my switch. I'll double check that too.

    1950 Mercury Heater Q's

Seeking clarification on the heater operation for this car. The heater switch, fan, plenum and heater core all appear factory installed. My heater motor does not operate. The switch seems to have one stop when pulled out suggesting single speed heater fan, true? The heater motor has...

What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

I've not done a thing to the car but run gas through the carburetor. I've put almost 200 miles on the car in the last month and a half. Things need to be done, but I don't like the prospect that the car would or could be laid up for any length of time. I do have a fully rebuilt OD trans from...

Lowest workable rear end ratio with 1950 Merc

Thanks Denny, currently I need to keep it at around 50 mph for that rpm. Appreciate it. I did get hold of Charlie, he has no transmissions but may be able to lead me in that direction. I'm making sure I cover both a rear end ratio change or the OD route. Thanks again.

Lowest workable rear end ratio with 1950 Merc

What is a reasonable rear end gear ratio for the 1950 Mercury 110 hp engine? The engine is in the station wagon which is geared at something like 4.4/1. I see that possible gear sets can be installed from the low 3's up to my current set. My tires are 28.9-inches in diameter, with a range of...
