Well gentlemen, victory.... Man has once again triumphed over machine! The car runs again.... It was a bad coil...... Put in a new coil and it fires on the first turn of the crank. I finally realized that I had voltage to the coil and then no spark from the coil, so it HAD to be the coil...

Yes, cleaning contacts a good idea..... I had a 68 Mustang years ago that wouldn't start. Spent countless days working on it, and eventually took it to a shop. One fuse in the ignition system was corroded and once cleaned it fired right up......

Yes, the key has been unknowingly left on until the battery is dead, and perhaps this will have burned the coil out? And yes, don't know why a coil would ever be mounted upside down. I'm a poor electrician, but eventually I figure things out....

I cleaned the points with 400 grit, no change. Spark looks weak. I wonder if coil is bad. The key has been left on before. Don't know if that can kill a coil? Coil wire suspect. I need to pick up a replacement.

Yes, confusing myself..... Yes 6v at open points Ammeter jiggling when cranking key on I cannot get continuity in the coil to dist wire..... Coil tests at 1.4 ohms. Someone mentioned that it should test at 3.0 ohms? I am NOT an electrical type guy, and don't know the significance of that...

I do have 6V to the points. I will check points gap. I also plan to check to see if I have spark from coil to groud with points open. Sneaking up on the problem!

Lots of tests to still perform. I need to have a look at the ammeter when cranking too. I do not think timing could have changed. If the timing was off I'd still have spark. It will be something simple when I figure it out.....

Yes, sneaking up on it.... It's a simple process of elimination. I will check continuity of the coil wire and also the coil. I can't imagine that the cap and rotor have gone bad, but worth trying. We'll see how the coil and coil lead test first. Everything seems right with the carb. I can't...

Well guys.... The battery test full on 100% I removed the spark plug leads from the posts on the distributor posts and set the plug leads close to all 4 posts on the cap. Key on and cranked.... No spark at all from the leads to the posts, so I now have to assume that I have an issue somewhere...

The needle is brand new viton tipped. On a previous non start event, plugs looked a little carbon fouled, and I took them out and wire brushed them clean and then it started. Plugs right now have a good tan color on the insulator, and appear to be just right. Agree that fuel today is junk. I...

I definitely have fuel to the carb and in the bowl, but when cranking, the plugs are dry, so I think fuel problem, But, I tried some starter fluid, and nothing, so then I think electrical. So I will persevere. Crazy how such a simple system can be so difficult...... !

Points open when checking voltage there. I tried cranking with spark plug leads off and really didn't see any thick blue spark jump, but I need to try that whole process again. The car is an older restoration but very little mileage. The cap and rotor are essentially like new, but I guess...

Yes, I wondered that about the battery voltage. 1 1/2 year old battery, but 6 V batteries don't last long in my experience. It is fully charged and adequately cranks the engine over, but it would be a good idea to have i load tested....
