    Full Moon Over The Merc

Yes, 1952 Sask plate and we had a few inches of snow Tuesday night. Slowly melting. I like your Meteor. A local guy has a 53 Customline that shows up at the car show most years.

    Full Moon Over The Merc

Glad I got the 52 Merc out for a few photos a couple of evenings ago because today we woke up to snow and cold. A bit early for winter but maybe its just a preview.

Changing oil in my 1935 steering box .

Corn head grease has been working ok in several of my old steering boxes. Including the 52 Merc. Although it still leaks some. Also known as "00 grease" available from other name brands than John Deere.

    starter button

I remember having a solenoid with a push button on the underside which was pretty handy. Not sure if they are still available.

    This site can’t be reached

Re: This site can’t be reached Started this morning for me and I finally got the page open to read this post.

Winter driving, back in the day.

I think you are referring to "frost shields". Early ones were glass but by the 1960s my dad was installing the plastic ones on the 64 Pontiac. The windshield could usually stay frost free but the side and rear windows needed the frost shields on to maintain visibility. Something like these...

    Stuck Valve in 39 Flathead

Maybe I just got lucky but I was able to get the valves freed up in two of my flatheads. The 39 Deluxe had a couple of stuck open exhaust valves that I soaked with penetrating fluid through the spark plug holes. Then careful tapping with small hammer and punch eventually got them working...

Wrench for brake master cylinder size

Its been a long time since I've opened the brake cylinder on my 39 but I have some memory of using a piece of 1 inch steel square tubing that fit right over the square head on the cap.

    First Drive of 2026

Not cold at all. Those big drifts blown into the bushes and windbreaks are solid and take a long time to melt. Like glaciers. There are still a few around today even though it is getting up to 70 degrees out there.

    First Drive of 2026

Just had to test out the new rear axle bearing in the Merc on the 29th of April. Only a few miles so not much of an endurance test but it was a good scenic drive anyway. https://youtu.be/GfdXd4bfm6c

    Mercomatic Fluid Check

Its true some think the Merc/Fordomatic have only two speeds but of course they have three. If you start in drive you are in second gear which is fine most of the time unless pulling a trailer or in soft ground. Yes one of the few differences between 52 and 53 Mercs was the dipstick on the...

    Mercomatic Fluid Check

Thanks for the replies. It sounds logical that the flluid level should be the same in park or neutral. Maybe its just a safety precaution when they recommend park on some. Either way I think I will add some.

    Brakes Siezing

Had a similar problem on the front disks on a square body GM. It was the rubber line swollen inside that prevented the brake fluid from returning when the pedal was released. It took a while for the pressure to drop. Another time had a similar event on an old early 50s GM pickup. Actually got...

    Mercomatic Fluid Check

After some searching I am not coming up with any info on the correct procedure to check the oil in the Merc/Fordomatic transmission in my 52 Merc. Online manuals do not mention it. I'm assuming it is checked hot, idling in park. Or is it neutral? Mine works ok with the oil very low on the...

    52 Rear Axle Bearing

Sounds like C&G Ford might not be the best choice to find my new bearings. These do have metal seals. I guess I will run them and keep close watch for any signs of problems.
