    An old postcard

My dad recently gifted me his 1927 speedster, which he built as a kid in the 40's in upstate NY. He has been sending me bits of ephemera as he comes across them, and I recently received the following, which I thought might be of interest. Jerry is my dad, the post card was sent to his dad.

Grinding valve seats - a question or two

Bruce- How the hell are you? As a matter of fact I am P.H. since you mentioned it, the roadster is moving slowly, as I guess you can tell from my rather intermittent posts. I would actually like to get you together with my dad one of these evenings, but I will send a pm re that. I have a bunch...

    update on windshield lower stanchions

More than once I have come across guys offering for sale a pair of lower stanchions for 30-31 roadsters, where one was steel, one was bronze. It seems to me it was the driver's side that was bronze, and in fact my project came with a (broken) bronze driver's side stanchion. What is with these...

Grinding valve seats - a question or two

OK, well, of course I don't plan to degree it, that would be impossible; I just want to get a better sense of its lift and duration, enough info so I can maybe identify it. A couple v-blocks, a dial indicator and the degree wheel should be enough for my modest needs.

Grinding valve seats - a question or two

I was away from this for a while. The main reason for attaching the degree wheel to the cam, is that the cam is lying bare naked on my bench, the block is off in Paterson being finessed. Or I guess I could just wait a while for it to be done, it is real hot out there in the garage these last few...

Grinding valve seats - a question or two

I received my kit from Neway today, which includes a 1 1/32" pilot, and 30, 45 & 60 degree cutters. My block is at the shop getting bored to .125 over (Egge pistons & Hastings cast iron rings) and some minor crackage fixed as well. In the meantime I will clean up the connecting rods and get them...

    Egge Tech articles

It has probably been mentioned elsewhere, but there is a nice series of tech articles by Doc Frohmader on 8BA flathead rebuilding at: http://www.egge.com/TECH-ARTICLES which seem well written and informative.

    Parts cleaner?

Gunk Super Concentrate- mix it with kerosene, it helps clean, and it emulsifies in water so you can wash parts off with a hose after soaking. Probably not exactly PC, and getting harder to find, but it was good enough for my daddy. I just got some from Amazon.

    Spray primer in a can

Just a thought- I was over at Bill Hirsch's getting some engine paint (very good selection btw) and some chassis paint. I asked what primer to use, and the answer was anything but Rustoleum. Seems it has a fish oil in it that inhibits rust, but will also cause failure for some better quality...

Grinding valve seats - a question or two

Thank you all, this is encouraging. I have been over to www.cylinderheadsupply.com looking at Neway tools, it seems that this is really quite affordable, a solid guide costs about $22.50, a cutter head costs $67 - $100, and a T wrench costs $9.25, and that is about all that is really needed. I...

Grinding valve seats - a question or two

I have an 8BA that I am rebuilding, and I wondered about the practicality of grinding the valve seats myself. I see that used seat grinders go for a couple hundred bucks on ebay, and the quotes for a valve job I have so far are in the $350 - $700 range. How hard is this to do myself, assuming...
