Many thanks for the suggestion, cadillac512. Everything about this '28 has been complicated and expensive, and your idea is so obvious, simple and cheap that I missed it entirely! Hooray for "country smarts."

I've been looking for replacements for the front hub nuts on my early '28 because one nut is stripped (the spindle threads are OK though.) The originals are 8-slot castle nuts and are 3/4 inch in height. I ordered 6-slot replacements from Eckler but they're only 5/8 inch high, with the result...
