    59A Engine update

The bad news came today, 2 cracks in the block . Oh well, on to plan 2 which is a '50 8BA to disassemble and get checked, I'm nothing if not stubborn. I'd like to keep the look of the 59 and I've read the huge data base on CR's where it gives CR's for 59 AL heads on an 8BA so I assume...

    Follow-up ? on 59A diasassembly

Several of you have recommended pressure testing, something I'm not familiar with. The car came with an AL radiator and higher pressure cap, how much higher I don't know but I drove the car 600-700 miles before I starting tearing it apart and it didn't leak water or oil, not even on the garage...

    59A Engine disassembly surprise!

JM 35 - Goes in a '48 Tudor. Supereal - This is a factory relief. From what I've read, it was done to truck engines to help keep blocks from cracking in high stress usage. Binx - For what I'm planning, this should be fine. 8.0-8.5 CR is easily workable with AL heads and 125-135 HP should keep...

    59A Engine disassembly surprise!

Began with the left head and, lo & behold, a relieved block! Oops - this is going to going to put a crimp in my CR projections. Oh well, onward & upward they say. Got the other head and valves out after a lot of prying & cussin' then called it a day. Woke up the next morning to a multitude of 72...

    Octane rating based on CR??

I'm rebuilding the 59A in my '48 tudor and am planning on a 4" crank, 8CM cam & alum heads. I haven't made up my mind yet on carbs, 2 deuces or a 4 bbl setup nor what the bore should be. This will be (So. Dak. winters permitting) a daily driver and, as I live 30 miles from anywhere, will...

    horsepower needs??

Ol'Ron - forgot to add - I'm going to rebuild the engine - pistons are already .030 over so thinking I might go to 3-5/16 and adding a 8cm merc cam in addition to bearings, valves, etc. The Mitchell has OD choices of 74% and 64% or final drive ratios of 2.8 and 2.41. Going that way I think I'd...

    horsepower needs??

I recently purchased a '48 Tudor that's been converted to 12V and has an aluminum cross flow radiator but is otherwise stock. Planned usage includes daily (SoDak winters permitting) driving and reliable enough to jump in and drive to wherever the road takes me. Since purchasing the car, I've got...
