    hershey

Hersey has been on my list of trips for awhile and this year my wife and I finally making the trip from southern Illinois. Plan on spending a day and half there. Will be in the area for the week. Anyone have suggestions on what else to do and see while out there. Automotive, railroad, oh and...

    49 Merc overcharging

The generator on my grandpas 49 Merc is putting out over 9VDC when reving the motor. With the motor off it is 6.5, and at idle around 7.2. This is a new battery only a couple months old. The battery cables were redone with 1/0 cables I saved from wrecking out an old battery backup system at...

    Leaky Holley 885

So luckily I found another carburetor that grandpa had. This one is a little different. Where the fuel line threads in, it looks like it’s possibly a flared fitting thread. However, I can’t find a fitting that threads into it. Does anyone know what the original thread size and pitch is...

    Leaky Holley 885

Grandpa years ago had tried to fix the leaking fuel line fitting that goes into the carburetor with JB weld. This slowed it down but never stopped the leak. He always kept a baby food jar under it that he dumped each time he drove the car. When I got the car, I founded a “self tapping”...

How does this clip go back on?

Putting the pedal assembly back together on grandpas Merc and it seems to me there is probably a trick to putting this clip back on. It doesn’t have ears like a regular snap ring, but was going to try snap ring pliers when I get back home. Thanks fellas if you have the answer.

    49 Merc fuel line routing

Wow, you guys have some amazing details! Thanks so much for sharing. The only thing I really need to find or figure out is how it goes from the frame to the tank. I have a good idea on how I will run it, but if I could make the bend look somewhat original that would be a bonus. Also...

    49 Merc fuel line routing

Years ago grandpa removed the old fuel line and ran a piece of rubber hose from the tank to the fuel pump. I would like to replace it with hard line before I get it out for the spring. I have an idea of the route it needs to take, but wondered if anyone has some pictures of how the line goes...

    Brake drum adjustment slot?

I had noticed on each drum there was what I thought was a “cut” in each one some time ago. Is this the slot where you are to measure the adjustment for the brake shoes? It just came to me this morning that each slot was in the same location and had a purpose, not just a random cut that my...

    1949 Mercury master cylinder rebuild

Thanks 19Fodry, that was the only place I could see that the rubber washer would go. Appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge!

    1949 Mercury master cylinder rebuild

I found a similar exploded view on Van-Pelts website. I am pretty sure it is correct. The washer is steel and not copper. Still not sure what the extra, small rubber washer is for….never hurts to have extra parts laying around!

    1949 Mercury master cylinder rebuild

I am hoping someone can verify I have the correct order of assembly for my MC. There is also a small rubber washer that came with the kit (see the arrow) that I did not find when disassembling the old one. Thanks

49 Merc master cylinder rebuild or replace

I had really thought I was going to get a lot of work done to grandpas car over the winter, but here it is almost spring and I’m just getting started. Ever since I became care taker of grandpas car it has pulled hard to the right when I hit the brakes. So a couple weeks back I started in on a...

    Compression results

So the thermostat comment brings me to another issue. The car seems to run very warm. At the the third mark and slightly higher. The only thing I have done to the cooling system was make sure it was full and put a 7lb cap on it as the one grandpa had on it would not actually latch down. I...

    Compression results

The car has not had many miles on it for several years. Grandpa would get it out occasionally but I would say less than 20 miles each year. This year I have put about 50 miles on the car do to lots of overtime, chasing kids all over and issues with the carburetor. I put a vacuum gauge on it and...
