Good news CHP came by today, validated the number, glued a new VIN plate on to the inside of the door sill. DMV Monday to update the registration and hopefully good to go. Thanks all for your help.

Thanks we were able to find it, it was very close (about 2 inches behind) to the engine support cross bar, essentially where ZZ Legends photo showed it. Had to remove the front fender to get access to where I could sand off the paint and rust and expose the numbers. Probably was an easier way...
