    Flathead conundrum.

A similar situation came up 6 years ago. No conclusion posted though. https://www.fordbarn.com/threads/flatheads-nature-time-and-effort.280433/page-2 But those were outside, not pickled in oil. Sounds like a super messy job.

Powermaster gear reduction hi-torque starter install

To replace an original style with a gear reduction style it just bolts up. I had to provide my own mounting bolts, but that was no big deal. As far as the electrical side, you have 3 choices (#2 depends on if you are using the I terminal to give the coil 12V for starting or not): 1-(Simplest)...

    Pull engine with transmission attached?

Can't speak to that exact application, but I prefer to pull transmissions with engines. It is much easier IMHO to stab a transmission outside.

    wires

I have what I thought were original style wires on my 8BA. Bought around 2017. They have a FoMoCo logo on the plug boots. I thought they were from Dennis Carpenter, but not sure now. They were fully built when I got them. I really wanted a "1950" look. Not sure I succeeded now?

    Help Seeking Engine Hoist

Harbor Freight has a nice chain hoist kit if you have an overhead I-beam. I used that in my parents garage to pull an engine from an Inboard Ski boat for my sister. Was a lot easier than the tractor and boom I was planning. Another option might be a 2-wheel dolly and some long ramps depending...

Fed up with 6 volt on my 53 F600

I can't add too much, but a few thoughts. Not sure I saw changing to 12V coil or ballast resistor mentioned. I have a Powermaster 9507 gear reduction starter so if you go 12V and give up on original style starters they work great and use the other side of the flywheel teeth so that is nice...

An article about my V8 8N tractor is in this one. Thanks Dave!

    carburator

I had decent luck with one. I rebuilt my original 94 a number of times but it never ran right. Bought an offshore 94 and put genuine Holley jets and a power valve in it. It's been running well for 2 years now. Mine is an unusual application though...

Is this the end of Swap Meets?

I attended and sold parts at the Nashville AACA meet in February since the mid-90s until 2 years ago. At first it was fantastic. Lots of people, reasonable space rent, good parts to buy, good variety, etc. But as time went on not so much. I also have a good friend in the Corvette world and...

    Starter bendix doesn’t engage tight

Re: Starter bendix doesn’t engage tight The Powermaster "original style" starters have a less than stellar reputation. The Powermaster gear reduction style have a much better recommend. They also engage from the front side rather than the rear so may be running on better flywheel teeth as well.

    45 to 48 fltwheel

My 8BA had an 11” clutch and my flywheel was not usable. For an 8BA be sure that any replacement flywheel you get is for an 8BA (not an earlier V8). The easiest way to tell is if the pressure-plate bolts are drilled all the way through. If they are blind, it is an earlier style and will not...

    Electric Fan

I have a '90s 3.0 Taurus 2-speed fan on my 8BA 8N tractor. It's controlled by a Volvo fan relay and a BMW temperature switch. All parts were easily found in a pick-a-part type junkyard. You do need at least a 60A alternator in my experience. Works great for me as my swap cannot use a...

    52 Mercury Flathead runs rough.

You can take a cell photo of the carb. Should be a list number on the horn. A photo of the distributor would also help. There are converted SB Chevy distributors that will work with a flathead as mentioned above. These have vacuum advance not the Load-o-matic system.

    52 Mercury Flathead runs rough.

What Holley 4bbl is on it? Too big can be an issue. Also using the Load-o-matic distributor with it as mentioned.
