Great question. I am still thinking about the best way to do this. Basically when the generator is putting out more voltage than the battery has, the generator cutout (a diode) allows the higher voltage to the battery, completing the circuit. I would imagine in order to answer your question...

I agree with Jim Mason, and from what I understand, the number on the engine is used as the VIN for the vehicle, even if the numbers do not match the frame. When I was 16, DMV allowed me to register my car with the tracing of the number from the engine.
