I just experienced a similar situation with my 31 SW, and after a long list of tests it was the condensor that was the problem. I replaced the coil, distributor body and cap, did compression test, ,checked oil for sign of water, insulated dash light wire completely, checked timing, made sure...

You might consider having the wheels powder coated, since it is more durable than paint and not much more than the cost of sand blasting.

Mine are ran through the cowl lights and the tail lights. I have not had any problems other than replacing flasher yearly. Got them from Brattons, THREE YEARS AGO.
