Help needed engine starting first time

It's a big satisfaction/relief when you overcome an "issue" on our cars. There will be more, that's what makes it fun.

    "On The Road Again"

Caveman, I've been in for 19.5 years and I'll be retiring in a couple of years. You are our future, for both the military and our vehciles. Good luck in "boot camp!" and you future military career. I thank you as well.

Totally dead after running for an hour

Does your starter make a clunk sound and that's it? I replaced my starter switch and I put in 1 screw that was about 1/16 longer than the others, causing it to ground out. I would get a heavy clunk when I hit the starter button and nothing else. I troubleshot for a long time, and somebody...

    "On The Road Again"

After a tour in S. Korea, it took a while to get Fred going again. Yesterday was the first ride in roughly three years and it felt great to be behind the wheel of my '30 again. I'm still chasing a discharge issue; but when he's running, he's going good. It sure made this 38 year old smile...

    You can't fix stupid!

I'm the third generation to own my Model A, wouldn't think of modifying it in any way like that. Build a ramrod from scratch, sure--but no inheritance or original!

Replaced Main Wiring Harness and now...

I too am chasing a problem, my 30 cranks and the dies. Anyways, he wasn't turning over after I replaced the starter switch. Thanks to the wonderful feedback, my starter switch had 1 screw that was slightly longer causing the starter to ground out and not turn over. Check that out. I'm curious...

    2 Issues Intertwined?

Steve, I have no fuse at the starter...but that is something to look at for long storage periods. Thank you.

    2 Issues Intertwined?

Hi Paul, once again you have good advice. I put the foil between the exhaust manifold/muffler that I was asking about earlier this week, waiting to see the outcome though (thanks to the new issues). I have a Tillotson installed, but have a Zenith as well. When my dad handed down the car he...

    2 Issues Intertwined?

Scott, It is a new battery and had a full charge on it last weekend, according to my charger. The cut-out is also the original style, I'll take a look at that this afternoon. I grew up in NW Ohio, about 30 miles west of Toledo.

    2 Issues Intertwined?

Got the '30 running Tuesday, the kids were thrilled! Went for a spin yesterday, and the battery was dead. I'm suspecting a bad cut-out, is there anyway to test it before I just start changing parts and extensively troubleshooting? Second issue is when I do get him running he just wants to die...

    Silly Exhaust Question

Steve, I do remember having a black soot come out of the exhaust upon start-up and spitting it on the ground. Tom, I'll first try to disconnect it at the maniflold and give it a shot. I grew up just west of Toledo before I came in the military. Louis, I always heard the manifold/exhaust...

    Silly Exhaust Question

It's definitly an exhaust smell. I know what she means; but being a (car) guy, I will drive it all day long and deal with it. However, I do want the wife with me and the kids in the rumble seat.

    Silly Exhaust Question

I have an original '30 Model A and after three years of hybrination just got him running again. Rougly 6 years ago I replaced the muffler/exhaust because my wife complained the smell was too strong. Well, I got him running last night and she refused to go for a spin b/c it's still too strong...

Missing Bendix Bolt in Flywheel Housing

I recently found my Bendix set-up broke as well. I called two parts stores and neither had the original parts I needed in stock, so I went with the new style drive. I'm rebuilding my carb now, so no lengthy tests on the new Bendix drive.
