    Backfire on deceleration

I had a backfire problem on deceleration. Backfire through the muffler. Turned out to be an exhaust valve on number three cylinder that was sticking. I use MMO in the gas and crankcase. I solved the problem by removing the spark plug and squirting MMO in the cylinder above the valves...

    Fellas... I've had enough...

I agree with Ryan. The suggestion of a user's name and address is right on. Thanks Ryan for trying to clean the place up. JD

    Shifting into gear after start.

Idle set too high. As mentioned could also be clutch adjustment. And then there are some folks that can't shift a Model A's gears without some grinding. You just have to get the "feel" of your car and its transmission.

    Installing radiator hoses

When installing new hoses I use Form A Gasket. Just a light coating on the inside of the hose. This make installation easier and helps to seal the hose when hose clamps are installed.

Suicide Knob - anyone still use one ?

I have one on my 31 SW Sedan. It is caramel in color and matches the gear shift knob. It's been on the Sedan since before WW II. The car has been in the family since 1933. I've had the Sedan since 1954. I use the knob and find it adds to good one hand steering.

    Time for new tires

I have a set of Universal tires. They have around 15,000 miles. Don't show much wear. They have nylon cord, so after setting they will flat spot. A mile or two on the road and the flat spot goes away. Flat spot is worse in cold weather. For less than $100.00 each I'm wll please with these tires.

    Rotella 15-40 oil?

I've been using Rotella 15-40 for several years with good results. The diesel oil has the additives that are supposed to help lubricate/protect our older type engines.

    Problem with replacement Tillotson carbs?

When Bratton's and Snyder's both dropped selling these repops that was good enough for me. A better question would be; where don't they leak? When I pay over $300.00 for a new carb I should not have to tear it apart to make it function properly. But then, It's your money so if you want to...

    Problem with replacement Tillotson carbs?

They are junk! Both Bratton's and Snyder's don't carry them anymore. I bought one from Bratton's last spring. It leaked like a sieve; all the time. Called Bratton's and they reported there were so many problems with these repops and the manufacturer would not stand behind them. They...

    No Engine Block Number, WHY?

As mentioned the motor is a replacement. Many times these engines were not stamped by the dealer or repair shop that did an engine replacement. Not special, just not stamped. There are a lot of these engines out there. I've had several.

Choke rod though the radiator I am T

This choke rod through the radiator has been in place for over 50 years. I made it and installed while still in high school. In no way has it caused any damage to radiator tubes. Quessing at potential damage to radiator tubes without any long term experience seems to serve no purpose. We...

    Top dressing discontinued. Recommendations?

In addition to Griot's Garage, Mac's lists a top dressing. Griot's is formulated to not only restore the color to the top but also protect and "feed" the material. If your top is toast, then no mount of any quality top dressing will restore a top that needs replaced. Paint of any type or...

the history of your car ???????

This is an easy question to answer. My 31 Briggs SW Sedan has been in the family since 1933. My Grandfather bought the car from Earl Koon. Mr. Koon purchased the car new from Ed McCrate the local Ford dealer in Columbus Grove, Ohio. When Mr. Koon purchased a new 1933 Ford Coupe he sold the...

How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?

Seems like you have been given a number of options to "paint" the white walls. As some have mentioned, tire black will work well. Brattons and Snyders both sell a good quality tire black. Or try NAPA for the tire black they sell. It might take a few coats but you should get the result you...

    Ford Barn Member Ages

Chronological age 72. Mental age yet to be determined. My 1931 Briggs SW Sedan was purchased by my Grandfather in 1933 from its original owner. Car was used for family transportation and mostly as a shop car around my Grandfather's garage. He gave me the car in 1954 when I was 15. Drove the...
