Thanks Kevin and everyone for your help. Kevin was correct, the handle was not going in all the way. The mounting plate was upside down hitting the door keeping the handle out just a little. It has to go in all the way in to work. Again THANKS EVERY ONE. I'll sleep better to night.

Yes, Tom it was using white grease spray the best I could with the panel on. And it worked OK before I took the handle off several months ago. lately I've been going through the back door in order to reach the front door handle. I'm not sure when the front outside handle stopped working. John

Sorry James, It's a 4 door. Getting old. The handle and lock worked with no problems before I removed it. I think it's going in all the way. I haven't put the screws in yet. I tried the key, but it will only turn about a quarter turn. I can still open the door using the inside handle. John
