carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

This truly is an awesome forum! With all the help and additional searches through previous posts, I feel like I got a solid crash course in carburetors! As Max mentioned, he reached out and will be sending a new float, much appreciated! As for the car show this weekend, I followed Will D's...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

I was really hoping to attend a car show happening this Sat... would it be a good idea to drill a tiny hole in the float (just to get the gas out), then patch it up with some gas tank repair epoxy like this one...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

Ok, that will be my next task. EDIT: Ah ha! I just removed the carb off the car and pulled out the float and gave it a shake... sure enough, it's full of gas! I wiped it dry and I can see gas seep out immediately... I guess a new float is in order! At least I now know what the culprit...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

Yep, the float moved up and down freely.

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

UPDATE: I took the top off the carb, removed the inlet valve, all looks good and clean, no crud. float moves up and down just fine... I left the carb open and cranked the engine (I have a button on the starter solenoid so was able to watch it)... the fuel bowl started filling with gas, but...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

Thanks Charlie!... I’m going to open the top of the carb once more to check that the valve/needle is seating correctly, and that the float is controlling the fuel correctly... I’m hoping it’s an easy fix since it was working fine before I messed with it. Perhaps Terry’s note about a piece of...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

Re: Not sure what I did wrong, carb leaking gas I have a rebuilt fuel pump from Charlie set at 2.5 psi, and it was running fine with no leaks before I opened the carb... I didn’t change anything else?? I just tried it again and it started up but after a few seconds, the gas started pouring...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

Re: Not sure what I did wrong, carb leaking gas Thanks Charlie, I’m sure your fuel Pump and Max’s carb are good based on all the forum reviews and recommendations, I’m just wondering of I did something wrong? It was running without leaks until I opened the top of the carb... so not sure what...

carb leaking gas, what did I do wrong?

Got a rebuilt Stromberg 81 carb from Uncle max, and a new fuel pump from Charlie NY for my '38 60hp. Car is smooth at idle but sputtering when I accelerate hard. After extensively reading through the forum, figured I'd check the float level... I removed the screws around the top of the carb...

    Which fuel fittings?

Fair point, but I'd like to have the fitting in hand before starting the job of draining the tank and and removing the old connection. I guess I can just order them both! :-)

    Which fuel fittings?

The connection from the copper fuel line to the newly installed gas tank in my '38 Ford standard has a small drip no matter how much I try to tighten it. I'm thinking the old fitting is no longer good? I'm guessing it's the 2 piece with nut and ferrule, but want to make sure I order the...

Bob Drake fuel sending unit / customer service

On top of that, I'm now noticing there is a slow leak/drip at the drain plug on the bottom of the tank that makes my whole garage smell like gasoline. I checked the bolt with a wrench and it's super tight, and looks like it's leaking from the rivets around the drain plug... ugh. I'm sure they...

Bob Drake fuel sending unit / customer service

I ordered a gas tank from Bob Drake, which required that I buy their sender unit also. The shop that installed the tank said the sending unit was pretty stiff and they tried to make it move as freely as possible, but the unit doesn't show accurate reading until the tank is about half empty. (I...

How to remove steering wheel? (1938)

Went to Harbor Freight and picked up the bearing separator and puller set, worked like a charm! Thanks everyone!

How to remove steering wheel? (1938)

I'm trying to remove the steering wheel from my 1938 standard to restore it. So far, I disconnected the horn/light switch assembly at the bottom of the steering column and removed the horn button and rod, then I removed the nut in the middle of the steering wheel hoping that would allow me to...
