51 Merc rear brake shoes help

Thanks for the info and help. The first set of rear shoes were from Obsolete Auto in OK and were 11in x 2 1/4 wrong width. The box was labled right but the parts were wrong. Now they want $30 to return them - yikes. I'll try and sell them here.

51 Merc rear brake shoes help

Having issues replacing the rear brakes on the 51 Merc. The original linings were about 2 in in width and the new Raybestos are about 2 1/4 in and I cannot get the hold down spring to compress enough to connect to the back pin. Are these the correct shoes? Are the front shoes different width...

    51 Merc hand brake cable

Thanks worked as you suggested. The only issue I had was trying to hold the Swede and a needle nose vice grip to old back the spring and trying to hook the cable unto the lever. It helped to have the wife hold the Swede while I held the spring and hooked the cable. Too much for one person to...

    51 Merc hand brake cable

All parts ready to reinstall. Any tips/tricks to get the snake/spring cable back on to the parking brake lever? Backed off the cable to the max but still having problems compressing the spring to connect the cable block end onto the lever. I maybe should have left the lever hooked up to the...

    51 Merc brakes replace

Thanks for the info. is the plate that goes over the anchor pin and sits over the shoes necessary? I know my 64.5 Mustang didn't require have these. It seems that the springs themselves hold the tops of the shoes from slipping off. Also The replacement springs seem a little thicker than the...

    51 Merc brakes replace

Anyone have suggestions on how to best install the two shoe retracting springs? The anchor pin is pretty thin to grab onto with the brake pliers. Also the new springs are quite a bit thicker than originals and there is no room for the plate that goes over the anchor pin between the top of the...

    51 Merc Wiring kit

My late father in law was the main mech on the Enola Gay and 40 years with NW air and he also swore using aircraft wiring for his own use on cars and motorcycles. Can one still get ahold of aircraft wires? I remember some were both copper and aluminum strands?

    51 Merc belt tensions

Re: 51 Merc belt tensions/deflection Ok to keep the thread alive what is the best non tool method to determine the correct belt deflection? I used to use the old finger push/ruler method but wonder if that is still the best way to go? Like the old butcher's thumb on the scale to weigh things...

    51 Merc Wiring kit

Thanks for all the charging system inputs, generator and fan are in. Is there a good wiring kit available for the orig 6v standard positive ground system? Also would the pos ground kit convert over to neg 12v ground in the future without major headaches? I know there are split opinions but, I...
