'38 Ford window crank handle removal

I received a lot of help from this website when I was fixing my first Model A a while back. I have recently acquired a 1938 Ford 81A 2 door sedan with a newly refreshed interior. Love the car, but I'm concerned about the window cranks rubbing on the door card material. I think I need to remove...

Rear axle shims- one or two?

FINALLY corralled my son to ride in the rumble seat and listen while I drove around right and left corners. According to him and his much younger ears, there is no noticeable noise from either side. Glory be! I'm going to call that a win. Thanks to all for the input. Much obliged.

Rear axle shims- one or two?

Update- pulled rear hubs, cleaned axles, installed 2 shims per axle. Repacked wheel bearings, installed hubs, torqued castle nuts to 100 ft-lbs each. Wheels on, ready to go. Waiting for a rumble seat passenger with good ears to listen while I take corners, which could take a while. Hope the...

Rear axle shims- one or two?

I removed the hub for the first time when the noise was discovered, don't know if it was torqued to 100 or not. I don't understand the "hub is still moving" part. Do you mean a detectable wobble after proper torquing and replacing the wheel? I had a semi-difficult time getting the hub off of...

Rear axle shims- one or two?

The axle shims I ordered have arrived, and I'm ready to install them on the rear axles of my '29 coupe. The You-tube video I watched shows 1 shim per side being installed, but they seem so thin and the car makes a loud noise when turning (according to my rumble seat passengers, I can't hear it...

    Newbie having brake (?) issues

That's good advice, and I like the invitation to ask questions. So- let me ask this: while I'm waiting for parts and a repair manual, I decided to attempt to raise the radiator for a better fit on the hood. The bolts at the base of the radiator have springs on them-?-. I plan to replace the...

    Newbie having brake (?) issues

Latest plan: sand drums, apply light coat of primer or paint to track future rubbing. Clean axles, apply ordered shims when they arrive. Repack wheel bearings. Pray to the Car Gods. Check to see how the wheels are turning, drive car, pull hubs to check for anything rubbing on inside of drums...

    Newbie having brake (?) issues

Could it be as easy as shims and gaskets and turning drums? You boys have given me fresh hope for a fix that I can perform myself. Thanks so much for the input. I will be busy ordering parts and finding a shop to turn the drums.

    Newbie having brake (?) issues

Hey- I appreciate the suggestions and. yes. I am new to very old Fords and a hobby mechanic, certainly not God's gift to the world of auto repair. I will await the arrival of the repair manual I ordered and attack the problem then. It kills me to let it sit 'cause it's a blast to drive, but I...

    Newbie having brake (?) issues

Thanks much for the info. I ordered the suggested book last night. The brake set up looks a bit complicated with the emergency brake in the midst of it all, but we shall see. I will try to figure out how to post pics, especially the drums. Might be able to detect brake drag from the photos...

    Newbie having brake (?) issues

Got my '29 coupe in March and took my first rumble seat passengers for a spin last week. They reported a grinding noise (?) from the driver's side rear and the hub was much warmer than the other side. I had previously noticed that the passenger side rear wheel turned much harder than the others...

    1931 Model "A" starter pedal won't depress

Well, the things I've learned already! The $22.50 repop starter switch was made with a hole too small for the shaft to have any adjustment room. It allowed for only one angle for the shaft to connect, making it jam prone. It was suggested elsewhere that the hole be enlarged or the innards taken...
