Check the compression, if it is low it won't start no matter what, been there.

Those cracks could have came from a large pot hole. The whole suspension to and fro is referenced to that area via the motor mounts to the rest of the car. Cracks are common to that piece.

Does the distributor shaft wobble?

Could you be seeing lead? My '31 coupe has a leaded seam between the quarter window and belt line.

Check the junction box terminals between the box and the firewall, the repros would easily short due the heads protruding beyond the box although with the age of your A it sounds like you have an original, but it's something to check.
