    Engine Popping Sound

Engine runs OK, particularly when the carb gas valve is opened further. The popping sound seems to emanate from the manifold area. Sounds like mini "backfires". In particular, when I first start up the popping sounds are almost constant, one every 2 to 3 seconds. Moving the timing lever makes...

    Engine Popping Sound

I am experiencing frequent “popping” sounds on my ‘30 A the same as described in Mr. Chauvin’s response to another earlier inquiry as shown below: My timing checks OK. My questions are: 1. I presume that Marvel Mystery Oil would be preferable to Liquid Wrench? 2. How much Marvel Mystery Oil...

    Laycock overdrive - Speedo drive

Bratton's sells both 89" and 113" speedometer cables for AA trucks both keyed end and square end. This is what I used on the output end of my home-constructed Volvo overdrive. George

    Electric Gas cut off

About eight years ago I filled my Roadster gas tank, then hurried home to park it in my three car garage before going for dinner. I always shut off the fuel valve when parking but was in a hurry this time and forgot. Came back a few hours later and had a full tank of gas on my garage floor. The...

    Rear End Pressure

I am very happy to see this thread. I installed a Volvo OD a few years back and have had a continued problem of oil being pushed out into the torque tube. Re post #9: 1. The right side is passenger side? 2. What is "differential poppet vent? 3. What size plastic tubing? 4. Does the system vent...

    Tight Bearings

I haven't posted a question for several years but this is now my third post in as many weeks.Have received some good help from the members. My 1930 roadster was getting a wee bit noisy so I pulled the engine and tightened up the main and conn rod bearings to what I thought was between .001 and...

    Pan gaskets

Just getting ready to put the oil pan back on after bearing "tune-up". I am using the rope type crank pulley gaskets. Three questions: a) Which is best - paper or cork side gaskets? b) Are the side gaskets meant to go over the top of, or be cut around the protrusion of the front rope...

    Front crank seal

Just getting my car re-assembled after adjusting main and conn rod bearings. Was considering replacing the original rope type front crank seal with a modern neoprene seal from Snyders. Your comments would be appreciated. Thank you. George

    Restoring crank and rod bearings

In the past I recollect restorers using two kinds of powder (one course and the other finer for finishing) which when mixed with oil were used to restore bearing journals. Prussian Blue was used to measure progress. One of the powders was color yellow. Apparently the abrasive qualities...

    Torque Tube Question

Tom, Thank you for your prompt reply. The OD has run perfectly and has not lost a drop of oil in 10 years. Oil is leaking past the pinion gears into the torque tube. This creates a bit of a mess and requires adding oil to the banjo at frequent intervals. There was no oil leak here before I did...

    Main bearing bolts

I will soon be replacing the main bearing bolts in my model A. I see that the grade 8 bolt set sold by Snyders comes with cushioned washers. Can I still torque up to 90 lb. without problems ? Any comments? Thank you, George

    Wrist pin check

I am experiencing some knocking in the engine. I am going to drop the pan and check mains and rod bearing clearances etc. Can I just wiggle the rods to get a feel for wrist pin clearances with the pistons in place? Thank you,

    Volvo overdrive question

I have been using a Volvo OD for 5 years that I made up from parts. Works like a dream on 6V. I have heard others who have small oil leaks from the OD say that they have to top-up the oil for it to shift properly. Geo.T
