    Steering box removal. 1950 F-1

I found a youtube video that explains the adjustment quite well, and what it does. I imagine I need a sector shaft and worm gear at the least and bearings etc. While the adjuster does tighten, which tightens the movement of the shaft, there's still play at all positions. You can turn it lock to...

    Steering box removal. 1950 F-1

I think I will just take it somewhere, and pay the $300 plus parts to have it done. I don't have the time or the knowledge for this kind of thing. Honestly I don't. I'd probably end up with it too tight, and be right back where I was when it needs rebuilt again. Body work, suspension work, or...

    Steering box removal. 1950 F-1

I wonder if the not hardened properly thing can be done after the fact. I work for a place that gets heat treating done on a daily basis. Or does it have to done pre machining? Most f the stuff we send out is still in rough form.

Not yet, but since I guess I am going to be doing this myself apparently, I guess I will.

    Steering box removal. 1950 F-1

Well, I am worse off than when I started now... The guy I gave the steering box to took it apart, washed out all of the lubricant, removed two gaskets from the lower plate, and handed it back to me. The adjuster was all the way in to the stop when I gave it to him. and had around 8-10 inches of...

    I think I broke something :(

You want to know the sad part. The drum brakes on the 98 Ford truck in the driveway, stlll use those exact clips.

1950 F-1 steering column internal parts?

Luckily I have another impact socket that is pretty much exactly the outer diameter of the bearing, so I should be able to tap the new one back in without an issue.

1950 F-1 steering column internal parts?

It's out. As far as a stop, mine looks like the tube is reamed out to a slightly larger diameter down to where the bearing is supposed to sit, and that's all. I used an impact socket as a slide hammer, and it only took about 10 to 15 taps for it come out. In the middle of it, I had to tap it...

1950 F-1 steering column internal parts?

Yeah, it's out, the box is getting rebuilt, now I just need to paint or powder the steering tube and shifter assembly. I wanted to get the bearing out before taking it somewhere, rather than chip it after the fact. Is there a lip I should worry about? I am imagining there is some sort of a...

1950 F-1 steering column internal parts?

Anyone that could help with how to get the bearing out of the top, it would be appreciated? Do you have to have something all the way through the lower end to knock it out the top? Is there a lip at the top so it has to go out the bottom? The box is getting built, and I was wanting to drop the...

Can someone show me the column shifter assembly page from a 1950 F-1 shop manual?

I think I just found it.. So you can just undo the clamp at the bottom, and the whole thing comes off, and just a pin and a spring at the top? That looks simple enough? That way painting will be simpler than I thought. Powder would require a total teardown, but painting no big deal. The inner...

Can someone show me the column shifter assembly page from a 1950 F-1 shop manual?

I am wanting to powder coat or paint the column parts, but I want to break it down so the results look a little nicer. Am I opening a can of worms, or is it pretty simple to do? I know there's an inner and outer shaft, and I am sure the pieces are somehow keyed to react to movements of the shift...

50 F-1, column shifter replacement bushing install?

I wouldn't be against nylon ones to tell the truth. If anyone makes any? Mine aren't falling apart, but I imagine they will start once they're used again for a few months.

50 F-1, column shifter replacement bushing install?

I've got the column rebuild kit in the cart, and waiting on the box and a few other things, since I would rather not wait a month possibly to put everything back together, and possibly lose parts, etc. I have heard now, that the brass parts have to be sweged or swaged, or however it's spelled...
