    1936 Engine Problem

Tom, Alsv8 is correct. Activate the solenoid, not directly to the starter. There should be a button on the bottom of the solenoid anyway, no extra jumper needed unless you can’t reach it from where you need to be.

    1936 Engine Problem

Yes, the ‘37 Ford had a solenoid (tall) with a button on the bottom, protected with a screw-on knurled brass cap. The ‘38 continued the tall solenoid with button, but eliminated the brass cap.

That;s what makes it a resistor. It starts at low resistance when cold, and quickly builds resistance as it heats up.

    1936 Engine Problem

Robert, I think you made a good guess. Timing gears are known to be a weak spot in a Ford flathead. Removing the timing gear cover is a pain, so you should be able to get a good view of the cam end with the distributor removed. Remove the fan first and use mirror while cranking.

    1936 LB marking

A bore scope up the oil drain hole might get a good view of a main cap. A scale attached to an extension arm of the camera could verify cap stud spacing. Might just be quicker to just pull the pan, I don't know! EDIT: Time be damned! In my book, the novelty factor would tip the scales!

Vintage V8 Ford Engine Repair Manual

That's the one manual that I've heard praised for years, but have never seen one in the flesh.

32 Flathead V8 too tight for starter to turn

There’s possible damage to be done here, that can be avoided with some additional labor now. Pull the pan and check that the main caps are not switched around. How much is your hobby time really worth?

    Prices are certainly down

That coupe might very well have been my ride back in 1957. I didn't make quite that much profit when I sold it.

    No room for more trucks

A machinist at my father's shop returned to the shop to pick up his paycheck days after losing his right thumb to a punchpress. He was asked how it happened, so he proceeded to demonstrate by losing his left thumb in the same punchpress. My father himself lost three fingers in a similar manner...
