57 with 312 rough when accelerating

Update: not so good. Sent the carb (a 1958 Ford 4100) off for a rebuild. Installed when it came back. Engine very hard to start and when finally did, it coughed, sputtered, backfired and then died. I tested the fuel pump by removing a line and watching the flow--looked good. Tested one spark...

    4100 Carb for 1957 312

Regarding run rich: lots of carbon out of tailpipe in idle and smell gas at cruise.

    4100 Carb for 1957 312

Thanks. Pretty sure it's a 1.12 as the butterfly openings measure 1.55". I read somewhere that butterflys were 1.44 on the 1.08s, and 1.56 on the 1.12s. Couldn't find the stamping.

Thanks for the advice. Currently preparing to rebuild or replace the Carb (came from a 58 332/352).

    4100 Carb for 1957 312

My 57 Fairlane with a 312 Y-Block has a 58 Autolite 4100 carb rated at about 600CFM and originally designed for 332/352 engines. Engine runs very rich. Should I rebuild the 600 CFM for $300-ish or buy a rebuilt 500CFM Autolite 4100 designed for the 57 312 for $600-ish? Thanks

57 with 312 rough when accelerating

57 Fairlane Sunliner with 312, Ford 4-barrel, and auto trans runs very rough when accelerating, especially at low speed. Causes car to shake. Does not occur unless car is in gear. Installed new U-joints and rear trans mount (engine mounts appear OK). No improvement. Engine has always "ticked"...

    1957 Fairlane Power Steering Conversion

I'm interested in converting from manual to power steering in a 57 Fairlane Sunliner with 312 V8, but I don't see any "original" looking kits out therer online. Any suggestions?
