The car does have the original coil. Thanks for the other tips. Thinking about this a bit more, the total voltage drop across the circuit must equal supply voltage. So if the coil is only dropping 2 volts then I am thinking that some of the winding's are shorted together?

It's the wide 5 but there are adapters available as Tom T mentioned to go from the 5.5 to the wide 5.

Ah I suspected that it might have had the lever arm type. I am looking for a modern tube type shock absorber, that's what's on it now and I made the assumption that might have been what was there originally but in my searches did see some lever arm shocks.
