sripped down a flattie that started banging in my friends 51 Merc and here's what I saw when i pulled the inlet What caused this sludging up round the valves Thanks

looks like it's a problem with too much end float on the crank. I'm guessing the lack of oil wiped out any shims. Everything else on the crank looks fine

I've been away but had time to whip off the sump and the big end bearings are all fine.There is a bit of rust in some of the cylinders which was odd. As said,it was hard to hand crank at first,when filled with oil, but then got easier.It whizzed over with no plugs in but when plugs back in it...
