Thanks Mitch, the diagnosing is obviously something buried in my German genes :)

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have to deeply and sincerely apologize. I'm for sure the biggest idiot on the planet. Found the issue: No gas. I was tricked by the fuel gauge and the fact that the fuel filter cup was full. Also had some flow to the carb, but obviously that came just dripping out of...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

OK, I'm a bit further down the road now. Checked coil, timed it. It now starts with Starter Fluid/Brake Cleaner, but keeps running only if I continously spray S.F. in the air intake. As soon as I move the throttle without spraying, the engine dies. Will try eagle's suggestion with the wet hand...

Thanks Mitch, I followed the procedure in the manual, but that didn't work.

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

OK, with a new charger, a recharged battery and after screen & clean, the starter now turns the engine, I have a spark and there's fuel supply to the carb. However, still doesn't start. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong with the start procedure. It's pretty cold here at the moment, about 35...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

OK, had a blown fuse, obviously installed by the previous owner between starter main wire and the wire that goes to the main terminal at the firewall in the harness. Replaced it, but still no spark. Then figured out that the wire at the positive terminal of the ignition coil was loose. Now...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

Status update: The 6V battery didn't charge properly, had the charger on all night and it still showed 6 Amps charging current this morning. After disconnecting, the battery still shows only about 3.8V. Took the starter out, disassembled it, cleaned everything and assembled it. Works fine on a...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

Thanks mrtexas. I followed the starting procedure you described at the seller where we pickup up the car and again on the trailer when we wanted to unload it. In both cases it started right away, so the problem really seemed to be that I flooded the engine when I started it the 2nd time on the...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

In my case the rear terminal is (-), but goes to the starter, the front terminal is (+) and goes to the ground strap (kind of copper mesh flat wire). I have no clue why the previous owner did it this way instead of turning the battery 180 degrees and use shorter wires, but it's definitively a...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've checked the wiring, it is positive ground, so a bit more relaxed now. I got a 6V charger from a friend, it shows correct charging, so will know more tomorrow. I didn't touch brake pedal or have any lights on. After I connected the charger, I tested all...

Dead 6V battery, 12V jump start with pos and neg wrong

Just picked up our 31 pickup - haha - and brought it home on the trailer. It started right away on the trailer, but then I was a bit shy on the clutch and stalled the engine. As I have no experience with the A at all, the 2nd start attempt failed. I might have had to much choke and/or throttle...

Welcome To The New Ford Barn!

Hi all! I didn't find a forum where new users can introduce themselves, so will abuse this one. If my post is inappropriate here, please move or delete. I'm German, live in Germany and just bought a 1931 Closed Cab Pickup for my wife. She raises sheeps "the old way", so the Model A will be used...
