Trying to determine what Fordomatic I have

Your post motivated me to go look in my 1949-1952 Mercury Chassis Parts Catalog. Thank you for your help. I may have found the answer. According to the catalog, RC looks like it indicated a "reconditioned" trans & converter assembly. See photo from the book. This should also apply to the...

Trying to determine what Fordomatic I have

What I'm gathering from this article about the history of Ford-O-Matics, is that they were built at a new plant to manufacture their new automatic transmission. It was the Fairfax Transmission Plant, in Fairfax, Ohio, outside Cincinnati. I've found no info about them being built in Canada...

Trying to determine what Fordomatic I have

Charlie ******'s site has good info on identification, but nothing that shows the 1P-RC. A 1P-R indicates a 1953 Ford-Merc small case. A 1953+ Ford truck uses a PAD- or PMA- small case. Reference info: https://charlietranny.com/FordomaticID.htm...

Trying to determine what Fordomatic I have

This makes sense. If the 8RT was the truck Flathead, perhaps this RC is the truck Fordomatic behind that Flathead. This has not occurred to me. I'll investigate this further.

Trying to determine what Fordomatic I have

I've tried to find info on transmissions built in Canada (if any), and possibly tag differences. No luck yet.

Flathead and/or Fordomatic Rebuilders in Detroit Area

Hello All, I'm considering having my 8BA Flathead and Fordomatic rebuilt in the future, so I thought I'd inquire here to see if there are suggestions for where I should have this done. I'd prefer to take either of them to a place with experience rebuilding these. If you have a recommendation...

Trying to determine what Fordomatic I have

Hello All, I have two transmissions, one is a Fordomatic, and the other I believe is a Fordomatic. On one, it's an oval red tag, says FOMOCO automatic transmission, with 1P-70003-J. The serial number starts with a 10-xxxxxx. That should be a 1954 Fordomatic. My question is about the other...

Let's start a junkyard fuel injection discussion

Kilohertz, I was not expecting to find this cool thread, but I'm certainly glad I did. I'd love to do something similar on my 8Ba. I'm going to have to dig deeper into this. Nice work.

Merc-O-Matic / fluid in torque converter

This is a used transmission that I installed. It had been drained and refilled, and I think there's some fluid in the TC. I just wanted to confirm I wasn't going to be ruining this thing if didn't have much in there.

Merc-O-Matic / fluid in torque converter

Great, this is good news. Thank you for the quick replies. I did not know that a '51 & '53 transmission had some internal differences. Are these Merc-O-Matics fairly easy to rebuild? I would assume that any transmission shop could. Or am I wrong?

Merc-O-Matic / fluid in torque converter

Hello Noble Ford Barn friends, I've got a '51 8BA with a '53 Merc-O-Matic in my '51 Mercury. When the transmission is reassembled into the car, is it necessary to put some fluid into the torque converter before assembly? Or, will it pull in the fluid from the transmission when it's started? I...

Flathead Temperature Sending Units - 6V or 12V?

Hello Everyone, I need some clarification, please. I have an 8BA in a '51 Mercury. I've converted it to 12V. I've purchased 6V reproduction wiring harnesses for engine and dash/body. I'm using a Voltage Reducer on the back of the gauges. My question is about temp sending units. Am I...

    8BA Flathead fan belt widths

I learned some good info, I'm glad I asked. I assumed a wide belt would be stronger. I don't have to change it to a wide belt, but I'm investigating.

    8BA Flathead fan belt widths

Will a 3/8" belt work in a 5/8" pulley? Will a 5/8" belt work in a 3/8" pulley? Dumb questions, I know, but I'm curious. I currently have an 8BA Flathead using 3/8" belts/pulleys. I need to rebuild the water pumps, so I'm thinking of beginning to convert the pulleys over to the wide belts. If...
