I have an 8CM,,,,1949 Mercury engine,,,,,,mine came with the stamped cover . My engine seemed to never been apart,,,other than having a valve job done to it . The insides were in excellent condition and only needs a slight bore to clean up the cylinders .

I’m with the others,,,try the timing . If it didn’t rattle before,,,,why would it start after boring it an extra.030 ? And the extra bore shouldn’t really affect the cylinder head clearance that much . 10.9 CR sounds kind of high to me,,,,,check your dimensions and calculations. Pete and old...

I inserted the handle end of a large screwdriver into the tube . Wiggled it back and forth a few times,,,,,it came right out,,,,,,no damage at all . Tommy
