Many thanks everyone - I'll pull it apart and have a closer look and report back.
There was a washer missing on the pulley mount. The generator appears to have a mix of different models in its parts which was a bit confusing but its all going nicely again now.
I took the generator off my 81A because I could hear a noise like a bearing running. Turns out the front bearing on the generator was fine but on reassembling the pulley mechanism I have about 2mm of axial slop - like its missing a washer or similar but I'm sure i haven't lost a part on...
Thanks so much Brian and everyone else. I'll give you call later today. To fill in the gaps the engine is an 81A and has a crab distributor. I notice that it has about 1mm of axial slop in the rotor. I wonder if this is enough of it to disengage from the cam slot resulting in me seeing no...
I regard myself as a reasonable competent mechanic but not yesterday. I installed a distributor 180 degrees out on the cam slot. I now have one failed distributor that I would like to know if it is likely repairable and if so can anyone in NZ do this or is it a trip for it to the USA and if so...
Id like to check some gentle binding on the left rear wheel. I am also keen to check the brakes. I would appreciate guidance on how to remove and refit those axle nuts and everything related before I dive in and stuff it up.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Phil. I've never looked at a starter motor mechanism closely but I imagine I will be doing so soon. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice.
The starter motor on my wife's 38 makes a metallic whirring and grinding noise on disengagement. I suspect the starter motor is not original. I would like any guidance before I start pulling things apart.
The vehicle is RHD and there isn't much room between the starter motor and the steering...
Just a final update and a public thank you to CharlieNY on this forum. Charlie has been helping me with this problem and with some parts and thanks to his guidance and generosity this quite complex problem has been solved. Thank you CharlieNY.

Temporary fixes in place and dead steady 19.5" on 600rpm - tried to upload a video of it idling I was so happy but don't think we can post video's. Thank you again to everyone. Just some spare parts to find and fit now and all fixed.
Regards
David
Update time. The main source of the problem is a sticky and leaking throttle shaft. Complications were a small leak in the inlet manifold. No vacuum to the distributor, and numerous small faults in the carb itself. I'm just organising for a replacement base now. I found it by accidentally...
