    Transmission Oil Temperature

We have a Mitchell overdrive in our '30 coupe and run 85/90 gear oil in it. Even with that on sub 60º mornings I put the od in neutral and the main in 3rd and let it warm up for a few minutes or the od is very hard to shift. Maybe it is just ours but 140 oil was virtually unusable. Dale

    Gas valve

WHM, The original shut off valve in our '30 was almost impossible to turn. After digging out the old packing and lightly lapping the valve it was reassembled with new packing. It has been in use six years now and will turn with one finger and does not leak or seep. I shut the valve off every...

What Transmission Fluid Goes in The MItchell Synchro Mesh Trans?

We have a Mitchel (overdrive) gear splitter in our car. 80-140 gear oil is much too stiff for most of our driving. I run 75-90 weight and still let it warm up with the od in neutral and the transmission in 3rd gear. Otherwise it is very hard to shift until it warms up. Dale

    5.5:1 Head or 6.0:1 Head?

I run a Burtz head on an otherwise stock .100 over engine. I can not say enough good things about the results. It netted me an honest three miles per gallon on fuel consumption with a very noticeable power increase. It does require less advance than the stock head. I hade to deepen the recess...

After 50 Years, How To Clean Fuel Tank

Certainly worked for me. No liquid escaped and I did not use a lighted match to check the progress. Guess you would call it common sense. Dale

After 50 Years, How To Clean Fuel Tank

johnr, Our cars tank was about a quarter full of foul smelling jellyed gasoline when we got it. Took the petcock off and drained that mess, then I put two gallons of acetone in and hooked up the air compressor to the outlet and let in enough air to agitate the acetone. In a couple of hours...

    Will your A Start today

My Dad always told the story about starting his Model A at -40º. He and his brother were working in a logging camp at the time in northern Wisconsin. They would get every other weekend off so the car sat for two weeks outside at a lot in the closest town. They were given a ride in and out on...

    Water consumption

Rus, Our '30 Coupe used some water from the day we got it even after having the head resurfaced, new gaskets, radiator and hoses. Put a Burtz head on it last spring and the antifreeze stays right at baffle level hot. There must have been a crack somewhere in the original head. Dale

    Spark Plug

Canton, Replaced the stock head on our '30 coupe this spring with a Burtz 6.5-1 head and picked up an honest 3 miles per gallon. No downside that I can see. Dale

    no start

Our popout failed this summer. Pushing in the switch would shut off the engine but would ground the coil and overheat it. Not enough draw to blow the fuse but would kill the battery and have some tar run out of the coil. I had a NuRex switch and cable which solved the problem. Dale

Distributor Mounting screw and locking nut

Our '30 coupe has an Autolite heater manifold . No problem with a 9/16s combination wrench and a screwdriver through the hole in the manifold. Dale

    sign of the times

My friend teaching his replacement how to shift the Mack Quadraplex by double clutching. Replacement's answer to that was don't be foolin me, I know that other one is the brake.

Problems restarting with warm engine on incline

Ober, What I have found to cure this is shut off the gas valve and let the engine empty the carburetor. When you get ready to go again you have fresh, cooler gas in the carb and it restarts and runs without problems. Dale
