loss of a vintage ford expert

I believe he and my father were sitting on the running boards of that car and chatting one day about the time my brother and I first met Tom. My brother and I had gone over their to pick up some parts and we took my father along as we knew he'd get a kick out of seeing Tom's facilities. My...

loss of a vintage ford expert

It's been a while since I posted and unfortunately this is not a happy post. I don't know if this was posted on this forum yet, but I did not find any mention in a search for it. I just learned that Tom Stewart, who had been working on vintage Fords for over 60 years died in a plane crash...

what was your first car and how much did you pay

$525 for my dad's 32 Roadster 50's hot rod. That was around 1980. He said he just wanted what he paid for it - that was in 1955.

advice on a steering wheel to look correct on 50's low boy rod

For the wrap on this, we opted to go with a VW banjo in ivory. It sets off nicely with the red paint. We'll track down a Ford emblem to put on the horn button. We welded a Grant style disconnect to the column. Mounting the wheel to the mating part of the disconnect required "oblonging" the 3...

advice on a steering wheel to look correct on 50's low boy rod

A general question on the '40 wheel, most seem to be designed for a spline attach. Can the backs though be drilled for a 3 bolt attach?

I figured the feel would be different. My guess is the car is so light the turning will still be OK.

Here's a pic of the wheel. It is definitely 17" diameter measured on the outside of the hand grip. The car was built in the late 40's or early 50's. Question I guess is does the size go by the OD, ID, or in the middle. A 15" OD would be OK.

Thanks all for the replies. Tim to your replies, the car does still have the tapered shaft. However, we were considering modifying this to put in a quick disconnect for the wheel. The fact is the low boy style is tough to get into. Perhaps a 15" wheel would alleviate that. Looking at the 40...

advice on a steering wheel to look correct on 50's low boy rod

It is a gorgeous wheel, but the cost is not in the budget. If I could pick up a ratty one for a few hundred it could work as the car is about half rat rod.

Here's another thread with a pic. There is effectively no interior yet. Just a couple 65 or so Mustang buckets. Some guy never paid for the work done on it at my grandfather's garage, so we appropriated the seats temporarily, that was about 1974. Now wish I had appropriated the whole Mustang...

For sure, budget is the issue. Had we thought about a different wheel on round one of this project, aka the 1970's, there was no end of the cool wheels we could have found in the junkyards for a couple bucks. Anyway, now we're talking what can we do for a couple hundred.

advice on a steering wheel to look correct on 50's low boy rod

Well, the rebirth of our Dad's 32 low boy roadster continues. It is now even registered, plates and all. Let's just say that walking into the DMV with a 1955 transferable registration for a 32 Roadster leads to some interesting conversations. That aside, the engine still needs some tuning, but...

    Some tuning questions

Flathead, Thank-you very much for that in depth description. It certainly covers it. On the propane issue, if you'll forgive the reference to a GM, the latter quadrajets, such as on my 80 vette were also supposed to have idle mixture set this way. But it was not for optimal idle. The method...

Thanks Bored. That certainly makes sense.

    Some tuning questions

We're getting it back together with the carbs hopefully clear of leaking fuel. With the needle valves leaned in better it's idling much better. But we had only a short on period, i.e. never warmed up. Lousy weather of date. We'll keep on the path we're heading down. Not steps is let it warm up...
