    Backfiring

When I let up on the accelerator at cruising speed, the engine lets out a soft pop, also when I go downhill with the engine in 3rd gear and foot off the accelerator I hear soft pops. What causes this? Thanks for any help Bill Goddard

    ignition coil ballast resistor

I appreciate all the responses above. They have cleared up the question for me. Oddly, I have a 12volt coil labeled as "super hot " that measures 1.5 ohms so I installed it with a 1.5 ohm ballast resistor. The resistance now measures 3 ohms on a 12v coil. It seems to be working. Bill...

    ignition coil ballast resistor

I have tried to search this question but no results. I have a 12v system on my four-door leatherback. I am trying to choose the proper coil. I have a 12v coil that says it has a resistor built in. The ohm reading across the terminals is 3 ohms. I understand a 6v coil should read 1.5 ohms so I...

    Engine ticking noise

I will check these things this weekend. Thanks

    Engine ticking noise

My engine has a ticking noise that increases with rpm and can be heard at idle when stopped. I think it is a valve clearance noise. If it is valve noise is it normal? I have heard it on some other A's but not all. Thanks, Bill G

How to distinguish one shock from another

How can I tell if a Houdaille shock is for CW or CCW action if it is not marked. I have 25 old shocks on my bench and not one is marked. Bill G

    Light / Horn Switch

I just called Bratton's. It is not fixed.

Pacemakers and Model A ignition systems

I am reactivating this old thread to bring this subject to the attention of the group. My post #1 explains the issue. I have since had more MRI's and the Medtronic unit has made it possible. Just want people to be aware of the issue. Special thanks to Maclab58 Thanks, Bill G

    TDC Finder

A lot of adieu about nothing. What's wrong with watching for the rotor to come to the #1 post on the distributor housing? when it gets close slow down and use the pin on the timing gear.

Car fails to acheave high speed

Dann, There is a hard stop---no screw adjustment--- on the throttle against the carb. The accelerator rod should allow the throttle to touch the stop. Check that the hand throttle does too. Bill G

    Starter Bendix bolt broken

Two things to talk about: 1---try a rare earth magnet, one about the size of a quarter, put it on the ring gear, turn it around with the crank and the bolt should be attached to it when it comes around. 2--- I got some Bendix spring bolts a while back where the long bolt with the nub sticking...

Car fails to acheave high speed

A friend of mine recently complained that his new car (to him) was not able to go faster than 40 mph and was unable to climb grades very fast and barely made it to the top of steep grades. He changed everything: points, condensers, coil, sparkplugs. He checked the timing, compression...

    Dead Pertronix Coil

After reading many posts on this forum in the past months I have learned that oil-filled coils should be mounted terminals up on an A. If they are tar or epoxy-filled they can be mounted either way. Original Ford A coils were tar filled and - I assume - were mounted terminals down because they...

    Trouble changing fan belt

Again, it doesn't matter. The space is fixed between the crank pulley rim and engine mount flange as long as the mount is attached to the engine. And the starting crank does enter the bushing -- works fine.

    Trouble changing fan belt

I can not change my fan belt without removing the front engine mount screws from the engine and raising the engine about 1/16" to let the belt pass through the gap between the crank pulley rim and the flange of the forged motor mount. I have been using a BX cross-section belt that is 13/32"...
