OK! Oldtimers, Gimme your best answer, Stuck Engine

5 or 6 years since rebuild; insert bearings; had been sitting before starting last summer. Oil should flow due to summer. (It was not 40 degrees out) How many total miles since rebuild? Most would assume you drove it around after installing the fresh engine, did you? How long had it been...

Y Blockhead may be the winner...I am about 7 miles away from LAX. I work in El Segundo. Stop in at the V on Catalina.

    Synchromesh or Overdrive

Re: Synchromesh or Overdrive What is a high speed rear end? Can you drive 60 continuously? I have the Borg Warner OD and use it on the freeway, but rarely on surface streets. It makes 60mph feel like 45 as far as engine noise. I have had it up to 70, but this is pushing the limits of the...

    Z mod for air filter

Since I run with a filter, I had it done, Renner’s Corner. Worked great on fixing the rich mix. I then had the spare carb done.

How 550x19 radials look on a 29 Town Sedan

Not a radial, but Lester makes a 525/550 -19 with 3-7/8 WW. So, 1/2 inch wider with a modern tread pattern. Should be more stable at speed, but harder to turn slow. Anyone with experience with the Lester tire; 475/500 or 525/550?

    Whitewalls

Fitting the cost of things into ones budget is always critical. Not sure the BW vs WW price comparison is accurate. Yes, you can get a Lucas BW for 99, but the do not make a WW. Firestone, Bridgestone, Lester make both and the price difference is 34 or 40. Still for 4 tires, $160 buys a lot...

    Cracked Block Options

Like others, the JB weld will work, but first drain, drill ends, remove paint/ Drexel tool grind area, degrease with alcohol or brake cleaner. I patched holes in ‘58 Harley heads and it stayed good for over a decade. + on dropping oil pan. I just did mine. PO said he religiously maintained...

    Rear end Lub Question

According to some articles, 140wt is the same thickness as 600w. Modern standard, NAPA and others have it. 85-140 works, but double clutching takes a fraction longer for gears to match speed to avoid a slight grind and I thought it was noisier. Had 600w, tried Dino and synthetic, before doing...

    Temperature Gauge

Installed one this weekend. I found that the thermo qual is accurate although the gauge is more responsive.

    CB radio question

I got my 10A power supply from eBay, $30. Case is isolated so no issues mounting it. Separate-/+ in and out.

    head lights??

Great to know. I was thinking the halogens would be a nice upgrade when the time comes. I typically run with lights on, but got an alternator when the generator had issues. The regulator makes it easy and I was not sure about cooking the batt. From the old school stuff I have read, are spot...

Confirmed, VIN problem that has always bothered me. What would you do?

Wonderful CA DMV can be a pain. I have gone through the VIN / registration grinder 3 times. 2 old motorcycles and the A. Both bikes required DMV referral to CHP inspection, the A was DMV only, but a wait for 2 different inspections on the same trip. Corrected the year for the A. Corrected...

Model A Times Article About Not Using Diesel Oil

The EPA issue with non-gasoline engine oil is the non-low friction additives. Motorcyclist have had these issues for years. Friction reducing additives are good for high gas mileage, but not so good for oil bath clutch plates. Rosella for my A? It is a good oil and was on sale, so yes, I...

    Zenith LEAKS after rebuild

How is the float valve landing on the float? If rough, the needle could be getting caught and kept from moving. New float valve? Check for stuff, grit or metal bits from matching it valve. Newer stuff seems to be not as good in recent lots.

    6 Volt alternator conundrum

Thank you! This information confirmed what I thought about my alternator. After noticing some odd light flicker, I decided to check things. Battery is charged and holds a load well. Alternator output at driving speed rpm was 9.7volts, at idle it was unreadable DC, but over 20 volts AC.
