I'm sure someone will correct me here. But I think you just fill it until oil begins to dribble out of the oil fill plug on the side of the transmission case.

My '47 Merc with older, possibly 39/40 merc motor ended up with water in the oil just after Xmas. Changed the head gaskets, and have seen no more probs.

Alan, I based my maths on the fact that in this part of the world, we consider 1 pint to be roughly equal to 0.6 of a litre. Therefore my 4 litres of gas is "roughly" equal to 6.66 times Alex's pint. So if my car idles for 1 hour on a litre of gas then Alex's car would run for 1 hour divided...

As laryh said. I have a new set of springs (unsure of maker) fitted to my '47 merc and they will not hold the hood open either, though they do take 90% of the weight out of it, making it easy to open and close. I use a prop to keep the hood open. Maybe the longer and heavier hood on the mercs...
