The owner said there are multiple interested people, but noone wants everything. Find a couple of those other interested people and split up the pile between yourselves.
Do you know if the Columbia axle has been gone through in the last few decades? There is a shifting mechanism inside the axle with a clutch built into it. Columbia experts warn that the original clutch material can stick, causing harsh shifting and breakage inside the axle. A kit is offered to...
When running 28 to 29 inch tall tires I try to get a final gear ratio with overdrive ratio times axle ratio to end up between 2.75 and 3.00.
The Borg-Warner overdrive can be a wonder setup, but trying to fit one into a Ford or Mercury built before 1949 is going to involve a lot of torch or...
Gratuitous reply to bring this thread to the top. I just added a "no longer maintained" statement to the original thread and thought I should bring this one up for visibility so the old one doesn't become a walking zombie.
This thread is no longer maintained. This thread was locked until Ryan had to rebuild the Ford Barn in October 2026 (date added for reference in future years).
Since this thread was locked I made a new thread with that combines the collected knowledge from this here with more information learned...
We made a new version of my old thread, updated with more information and pictures no longer failed from photobucket. Link to the newer improved thread here: https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=334280&showall=1
Re: 53 8BA Flathead Running Hot – Looking for Cooling Advice
If the car was a trailer queen, was the engine assembled for driving or just for show? You could try re-torquing the head bolts to see if the that eliminates the apparent exhaust gases that are getting into your cooling system. If...
Re: Question about a 36’ flathead pressure plate.
One of the limitations on swapping pressure plates is finding one that works with the large size throw out bearing (clutch release bearing) of the early Fords. Most pressure plates for Ford passenger cars from 1949 and later do not work since...
Re: 53 8BA Flathead Running Hot – Looking for Cooling Advice
Welcome to the Ford Barn, I like the testing you are doing, particularly the thermometer in the radiator.
Several questions to help us help you:
Have you had this car run cool before, and now it is getting hot? If yes, what was...
I'm stuck on the detail "5 blade fan". Does your truck use an original crankshaft mounted fan, or is it a later type mounted off the generator bracket? The original fan for a 41 Ford pickup is a crankshaft mounted 6 blade fan.
I have not experienced fan failure of an original Ford stamped steel...
I think the mount changed in 1937 for all vehicles using the passenger car / half ton frame. Van Pelt has a nice page wtih information about the rear mount on early Ford three speed top loader transmissions here: https://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_transID_3speed-rearmounts.htm
Does the coil have a marking like "use with external resistor"? If so, add a ballast resistor in line with the coil. The distributor doesn't know what type of coil it is firing, an external resistor can coil can work just fine with a crab distributor.
Are you still 6V?
Are you aware that Ford...
Another option was offered, at least for a while. Roadster Supply offered domed lenses for 37 Ford tail lights: https://www.roadstersupply.com/1937-Ford-Custom-Tail-Light-Lens-p/soc-60624.htm
They are out of stock now, you could inquire if they will have another run of them or not.
