Model AA Dump or '46 One Ton Dump

Looking to buy my first truck. There are a couple unrestored and in my price range locally. One is a '30 AA dump that looks to be in decent condition. Runs, drives, brakes work and dump works. The '46 needs front brakes but is also in decent shape. Needs new windows on both doors. Both cabs need some things to tidy up the interior. This would be a purchase to run around town, make trash and home depot trips and give the kids a ride around the neighborhood. I have never driven either but before I do, I thought I would ask for much more experienced minds. Parts availability, ease of working on and reconditioning? I have no plans to restore or make it a show quality truck. Just plan on driving and using it. I would imagine there is quite a difference in the 16 years between the two trucks in terms of how they drive.

Welcome to the Forum. I would go with the 30 AA, your description says it is in better shape. Their are more original AA Parts around than for the 46. Also more Reproduction Parts available for the 30. Down the line for Resale, I think the AA would sell easier. But it is Your Money and Choice. Check out this link for Model AA ford Trucks http://www.fmaatc.org/ lots of Info, and Help if need their, and also here on the Ford Barn.

Of course I'm partial to Model A's, I have 3. and I'm Restoring a 1931 Model AA. 157" wheelbase Oil Tanker.
PS. what City and State do you live in, Put it under your Avatar, a barn member may live near you if you ever need help.

There is absolutely something about that AA though I do like the style of the '46. I barely have the dollars or the space for one let alone two. The '46 would need work to be road worthy and the AA would not. I will visit the AA again tomorrow and drive it. Thanks for your replies.

In that case, the AA sounds like a better truck, and it also sounds like its gotten your heart. Parts are easier to find and less expensive too.

The AA would be easier to work on and as Kurt said the brakes would be more dependable. AA's have large brakes and can really stop. Hang on we're going to test the brakes.

Here are some pictures. Let me know what you think. CAM00010.jpg

I keep telling myself the same thing. I like the style of the '46 but it needs more work and the hydraulic dump does not work at the moment. The engine has been sitting for nearly fifteen years in a barn. The '30 AA needs a new seat, interior floor boards and a few other things but it is all functional. I will likely buy the AA.

You can get the measurements for the wood floor board pattern from the AA truck forum for free. Go to Home Depot or Lowes, they sell cut offs of lumber, you can get a piece of plywood cut off and make proper floor boards for about $4 !!

A couple of things to know, It has a Model A radiator not a AA and with those
big front tires (look like 6.50 or 7.00) they will probably hit the front brake rods
when turning. The truck looks like a good start, I like it.

Actually the floorboards for the 1930 AA are a bit different. I got the measurements from AA wizzard and cut my own for the customer. I can't think of the guy's name at the moment but he is or at least was the head of the AA club as I recall.

Neil Wilson is the AA guy to contact.
