Never did like side mounts. Bought a "32 cabriolet years ago that had dual side mounts. It was the first thing I took off and mounted the spare on the back.

TJ has got it right. Like him, the first thing I did with my Convertible Sedan was to unbolt the dual side mounts and sell the ugly things at the Portland swap meet.

I can only imagine how many fenders were cut on early V8's to install tire wells when this was all the rage in the '60's-70's.

For safety reasons, the fender mounted spares were always on the passenger side, unless you ordered them for both side.
For the same reason, cars of the 30's and 40's only had one exterior door lock.
It was always on the passenger side front door.
So, on RHD cars and LHD cars, the exterior lock was always on the passenger side.

In the U.S., at least, one could order a single side-mounted spare on the driver's side.

Note that the subject Tudor sedan has three spare tires in total.

Some "rough" times ahead must be expected. I am also surprised that the rear spare did not get the same treatment as the "dual" sidemount's.

Maybe it's just me and seeing and looking at them for SO long now that its just part of the styling but I agree on the 33/34's about not being all that pleasing to the eye......BUT on our German 32 and the semi custom 32's from Germany the dual sidemount's look much more appropriate as well as pretty much a necessity given the rear trunks.

Robert,

I like side mounts with some '32 body types, as well.

The rear-hinged front doors on '33-'34s necessitated that the side mounts be elevatd substantially to provide cleaance, which doomed their "fit" styling wise.

Very good point . . . never thought of that and it is precisely why they stand out too much for my taste.

As noted, on body styles like pickups, sedan-deliveries, etc. - they are okay as they don't stand out so much and there isn't an easy place to put them in the rear of the car.
