39 rear shock problem

Trying to install my rebuilt ( Andy’s Shox) and there’s no way the links will fit. Shocks appear correct but I have about 9” between shock arm and mount. The shackle is also interfering with link (3”). Can anyone post a picture of a 39 shock mounted so I can see what’s wrong? I have not mastered posting pic on FB but can email. Thanks, Mark

I think so but it was 40 years ago when I got the car and rebuilt the rear end and installed new axles. My shackles point down, if they were reversed it looks like they wouldn’t interfere.

The axel perch is at the top of the shackle and the spring eye at the bottom, right? Maybe post a picture.

the perch on mine is below the spring thus the interference and the 9" between shock arm and perch. i too thought it should be the other way but is not the perch part of the axle housing? i am sorry i cant post pic that is why i was asking for one. Mark

Marko,
I have attached three photos that I hope will help you. These are all different '40 body styles. And, although the shocks are different for concourse purposes, the size, shape, etc. is the same. They also mount identically to your '39.
Your 3" link is correct.
Please look at each photo carefully. I am willing to bet once you study them, you'll find the "fix" an easy one.
With no weight on the frame, the spread between the shock arm and link is a seemingly long distance. However, by rotating the arm down, the link can be installed. Rest assured I'd restored more than my share of '39 and '40 Fords.

The problem is the perch is below the shackle and it should be on top. I think when I had everything apart 40 years ago I installed the bells on the wrong side. I am studying this to see if switching the bells will put the perch on top. Thanks for the pics Mike, but I couldn’t see the perchs. Mark

better check and see if your drain hole is on top of the banjo. Its possible the whole works is upside down.

Some pictures of my '41. Yours should be very similar.

Marko, I managed to find another photo of a '40 I had restored. I think this one offers a fairly clear depiction of the area you are attempting to see. Yes?

it is clear from pic that perch has to be above spring shackle but mine is below. center section is correct leading me to believe the axle bells with the perchs are switched. the left and right have different part #s so i may have made a rookie mistake years ago. how hard would it be to switch them with rear installed?

We really need to see a picture of what you have.
It is possible to switch axle housings with the rear end in the car. EXCEPT, for the fact that backlash (spacing) between the ring gear on the differential and the pinion gear in the center section is controlled by arranging the layers of gaskets between the housings and center section. That is tricky business and best done by someone with experience.

Sure enough, your axle housings are switched left and right.

And for the record, the only relevant difference I see between your '39 and my '41 is that on the '39 the spring fits up inside the cross member and on the '41 it clamps to the bottom of the cross member

If you can find a shop that has done 32 - 48 rear end gears, that may be your best bet. If you decide to do it yourself, I can walk you through the steps.
