Before I get mad

I just want to make sure it wasn't my screw up before I give Mac's a call. I have a 59AB in my 35 Cabriolet. I ordered and received a conversion radiator hose kit (MF-140-D) that says "37-48 V8 in 1935-1936 Ford". There is also a Bob Drake sticker on the package that says the same thing.
I just went out to dry fit these hoses. The bottom hoses have the correct offset to them but they're about 1 3/4" too short. The upper hoses are at least 2" too short and the angle is a bit off (but probably workable). Anybody else have this problem? These hoses were about $75 and I'm not too happy right now.

Here's a couple pics

Nope! It's not you! I even went and bought the Gates that were recommended by people here, and they were still short. End result, I bought two pieces of 12" X 1 1/2" polished aluminium pipe and installed with gated reducers from 2" to 1 1/2"

Just a wild guess here......My '36 has two sets of radiator mounting holes in the frame and '35's MIGHT be the same.If I remember correctly, the forward holes are for trucks and the rear holes are for car.It could be that your radiator is bolted to the wrong holes. Is there another set of holes rearward from where it's bolted to now? If not,now is the time to throw something.

JR...are those just Gates 1 1/2" x 45* at the top and 45* reducers at the bottom? Something autozone would carry?

No I took the the entire hose just like the hose in your picture and cut it on both ends. Then I installed the 1 1/2" reducers on the ends that the conduit go into.

JR...I love the look of your engine and the polished pipes look great. The "theme" of my engine is a little less flashy. I will probably do the same thing you did but with 1 1/2" exhaust pipe painted gloss black.

jrvariel48......Not to get off-topic here, but could you shed some light (and maybe picture(s) on that nice-looking fan SHROUD you've come-up with there. Don't see many of those on a '35 or '36. DD

V8 that'a a plastic shroud made by Walker. I found it on ebay, but I believe Walker still makes them, possibly model Ws-55A? It comes with no hole so you can cut it where you need it and to the size you want. I'll attach some pictures in a bit.
Thanks, Joe

Here's a couple of pictures. If you look at the first picture, you'll notice some radiator hose material stuffed between the upper radiator hose and the shroud. I put that there to help bend the shroud away from hitting the fan.

Part store had some 1 3/4" exhaust pipe. Got them cut to length and the paint is drying. Will post pics when I'm done.

I'm thinking whoever makes and packages those hoses for Drake probably cut those too short. Then MAC's buys them prepackaged from Drake and adds their part number info.
I would have sent them back with an explanation of what's wrong. I have used the upper hoses made by Gates and sold by NAPA at ~ $14.00 each and they fit well in my 35 tudor sedan with built 59 engine.

With the upper hoses, What about adding a short piece of straight hose and a short piece of steel tube to each side(at the head) This would work for holding the thermostats in place if you were planning to run them. Just a suggestion based entirely on your second photo.
Failing that JM35 Sedan's info sounds good.

Here is the top one I'm using on my 36 with 37 engine. It is about 17 inches long measured diagonally. Hope this helps

John, I haven't cut any of the hoses yet and can send things back if I need/want to. I bought a couple short pieces of 1 3/4" exhaust pipe, cut them to 12" and am in the process of painting them. My dad always ran the "crinkle" flex hose...worked well but I don't like the looks of them. I had no idea that napa had hoses that would work for this application...guess I should have asked here first! It sounds like others have had problems with these conversion hoses so I don't think it's just me ending up with a fluke. I like the look of the pipe section in the middle so I'm leaning toward cutting the hoses that I have.

Nothing wrong with the direction you're headed at all, but $70 sure is an insulting slap in the face for B/S parts that require you to go to PLAN "B" to make their over-priced crap work. Again........two big outfits that can't even get the lengths correct on something so simple as frikken' hoses. DD

DD, I AGREE! I've had other instances of dissatisfaction with Mac's so I'm done. I could package the hoses back up...spend some money on shipping, wait for the new (possibly wrong again) hoses to arrive. I'm going to cut my lost time and money on this one and use the metal pipes (I like the look). I'm the kind of guy that if I'm unsatisfied as a customer, my best recourse is to just stop being a customer. Based on this situation, a situation last year and in previous years, I will no longer be a Mac's customer. I have done this with other businesses throughout my life...it's been over 20 years since I've been to a Taco Bell...and I LOVE taco's!
