Iron Thomas heads.

I was asked by someone about having an iron Thomas head made from my new tooling. Someone else made a comment to me about the preference of iron over aluminum. That makes me wonder if there is an interest for any substantial quantity of iron versions of the head, or is the market more slanted towards aluminum?

I would like to see the differences between the stock looking 6 to 1 head, the Thomas, and the Winfield. Are the combustion chambers all that different?

Didn't Winfield say: "Iron is for racing and aluminum is for cooking!" Or some such saying. What about a cast iron repop Simmons Supper Power Head? Than you would be cooking with gas!...:D

some of the best/most reliable engines ever made were iron block and iron head, same materials expanding and contracting at the same rate:D

i dont think anyone makes an iron head engine anymore...

Yes, Winfield said iron is better than aluminum for racing as power comes from heat, plus they don't corrode like aluminum. I never thought much of the original Thomas combustion chamber, but what do I know???

Does anybody have photos of the various heads that show the combustion chamber? Do any of them work better than others? I had a Winfield on a B motor for many years, and it ran great, but have no experience with the others.

Tod I just bought one from snyder's can you point me to any history about the head?

Hey hale,
You just bought a Thomas IRON HEAD from Snyder's
Tod's question is about IRON Thomas head manufacture. If you do have such Thomas, please post top and combustion chamber pics for us. Thanks.

Note:
ANYONE have a Thomas Iron Head and can show pics ?????

Hey Tod,
Yeah, I'd be in for one Thomas IRON Head , at that price :) ! I think that 7:1 would popular.

Note: someone (Bob) mentioned Super Simmons Power Head. I have one if you would like to see pictures of top/comb chamber ? Let me know.
Also, it has so MUCH writing on the top that I don't know if you can or would be interested in duplicating that  The combustion chamber is DIFFERENT....but I think only about 5.5:1, which back when (1935?) might have been the bomb, eh .

Tod,
If you make a run of iron heads I would be interested in purchasing two @ 7:1.

There is mention in the Snyder's parts book that a stock ignition cable will not thread into the distributor when using a Thomas. Will your iron head have the same fin design that causes this issue?
Sorry, I no longer have an aluminum head on the shelf to study ...I can't recall the area it interferes.
Good Day!

And, while we're at it, let's quell the rumor that I am not making a new Thomas to replace the old equipment. Snyder has informed me that it has been told that I am not making a new Thomas head. That is false. I would not have modeled one and cut the pattern and jacket core plug had I intended to just look at my handiwork. I have not finished the core box because I am waiting for Snyder to sell off the last of his product before I give him new stuff to sell. No sense making castings while he still has some.

Thanks for clarifying Tod. I myself like iron over aluminum. Would be interested if this happens. But I seen that Winfield crow foot before hardtimes installed it and I am leaning more toward that one as he talks very highly about how it runs. Will keep following your post. Mark.
