License Plate warning!

In Massachusetts you do not need a pair of year of manufacture plate if you can only find one. I am not sure if they have a web site where you could check to see if it already being used. Any one know if the RMV has one in Mass and what it is ?

Ctvpa....Get a hold of Henry DiOrio in Wilmington,Mass.....He sells plates and guarantees that they can be used....

I just bought some YOM plates for my roadster. It never occurred to me to check with MVA first to see if that number was available. I am having them restored now.

I haven't checked recently, but in Illinois we can't register a car with old YOM plates.

However, we can drive the car with the YOM plates displayed as long as 1) you have legitimate Antique Vehicle plates for that car and you have those plates IN the car, and 2) you are on your way to or from a car show, parade, or a service place to get the car repaired.

Back in the 80's This was my" vanity "plate on my 1974 VW daily driver.."OHSHYZA" when ask by the DMV it's meaning, I said that it was my dogs name..O how cute was the reply...every so offen someone would get it..:}}..heips if you speak German...think O...S... still have them..(jr2..Los Angeles Cal)

Well, that's easy! Wherever we drive our V8s it's a parade, wherever we park it's a car show, and back home is where they get repaired. :D

I was at the Friday nite cruise a while back and a Cobra kit car had a plate that read PHKULYN. I ask the guy how that got by DMV. Said it was his x-wifes name. I see her name but DMV thought all of it was her name. LOL

I had YOM plates on my '51 for about 15 years. One day, I went to the mailbox, and got a package containng a letter that informed me that the numbers on my '51 plates had been re-issued currently, so I could no longer user them. To ease the pain, they included a set of Minnesota "Collector Plates". Best of all, no charge. I am now waiting for the guy who got the re-issued number to junk his car so I can put my plates back on.:D

I heard a story - don't know if it is true or not.
In Georgia, they have a round peach in the center of their licence plate.
A fellow wanted "ASHLE" for his vanity plate.
When he got the plate, it came out, as "ASHOLE", with the peach being the "O".

Several years ago I bought a 49 PA plate. Sent it off to be refurbish and then about a month ago I tried to register the car with the plate. Found out that it was already being used. Seems like maybe I was sold one plate and someone else got the second plate. I wasn't aware that you can check online to see if the plate is valid. Found another plate and it checked out as available. Bob

I tried to get a vanity plate for my 31 coupe hot rod , I wanted "BITCHN" which was turned down as being offensive(I didn't think so), but I've seen a plate running around town which has "AK MILF" on it, so go figure. I guess it depends on your generation as to whether or not it's offensive .
On another note though I was able to register my 61 Comet with YOM plates only after calling the girls supervisor over to convince her that the metal year tabs on the plates were authentic. The young girl behind the counter had never seen anything other than a sticker.

Hello ctvpa, I enjoyed the pictures of your 28, I recently purchased a 28 AA and am now in the process of trying to locate vintage plates for it and was wondering if you could advise me so I could avoid pitfalls and problems that so many seem to have. According to the VIN my truck was built 11/28/28 and is a sweet ride. Do you know if I'm correct that the passenger vs trucks have different designed plates? Any help/advice is much appreciated.
Thank you, James

I have been trying to find a set of California commercial plates for YOM registration of my '31 RDPU for the last couple off years. Swap meets, collectors, EBAY, fordbarn posts, HAMB posts. I am yet to even see a pair for sale. I have been warned that they will not be cheap. I am not a plate collector (you should talk to one) but I know that the correct plates for 1931 have small letters PC (standing for Pneumatic Commercial, they also had SC for Solid Commercial and a few others) on the plate. Look on EBAY and if the seller knows what he has you can see the small letters "PC". There is one bit of good news. I have heard from several sources that you can use passenger car plates for YOM registration of your truck. This may be because according to the DMV code book you can use passenger car plates on pre 1936 commercial vehicles, or it may be because the DMV doesn't know the difference or maybe they just don't care. You can do a quick check to see if the number on a plate you find can be used by going to the DMV site to order vanity plates and input the number. I have been cautioned that this data base is not complete and you should call DMV in Sacramento and have them check the number in their data base(s).

So how can they issue your number if it was already in use? That makes no sense at any level. That is why it is good to check before buying YOM plates because they can't reuse numbers already in use as yours were.

Not sure about MD, but here in SC the DMV won't accept altered (i.e., restored) plates.

I was thinkng the same thing.

In NY plates must be original and not used on a daily driver, you also need to send a picture of the YOM plate to the DMV, they do have a phone # to call and check to see if numbers are in use.
